Center for Integrated Biomedical and Rural Health Research: An NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Montana
Pilot Project Grant Program Guidelines for 2025
OVERVIEW:
We seek innovative Pilot Projects for funding by the NIH-funded Center for Integrated Biomedical and Rural Health Research (CIB-RHR). We encourage applications that propose new, innovative research projects that may ultimately lead to larger NIH CIB-RHR funding and independent NIH funding at the McLaughlin Research Institute/Weissman Hood Institute at Touro University. We anticipate funding of two to three awards. Below are the guidelines:
Application Guidelines
The NIH application requirements are extensive, particularly if your project will involve human subjects research and IRB preapproval, so please allow yourself plenty of time to assemble a strong application. You must adhere to NIH-imposed page limits and other guidelines given in the instructions.
ELIGIBILITY:
Individuals must meet the following criteria to be eligible for funding through this program:
o Full-time faculty at TouroCOM-MT (including faculty at McLaughlin Research Institute/WHIT)
o Clinical investigators from the Benefis Health System or other healthcare provider
o Faculty at other institutions in the state of Montana who are actively collaborating with TouroCOM-MT and/or McLaughlin Research Institute faculty
o Applicants must not have a history of independent R01 funding from the National Institutes of Health
o Applicants cannot be currently funded by other NIH COBRE grants
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
o Applications are due November 1, 2025
o Participation of multiple faculty members is encouraged but one faculty member, meeting the criteria above, must serve as the principal investigator (PI) of the proposal
o As the purpose of this funding is to allow for investigators to acquire data for a subsequent, larger NIH grantapplication, the proposals must include a brief description of plans for seeking future extramural funding
o Proposals must identify the anticipated funding source(s) and the specific funding program that will be pursued (where possible) and explain why a future proposal will be competitive for a particular sponsor
o Proposals must identify a timeline for proposal submission, possibly during but most likely within twelvemonths of the end date of the Pilot Project Grant period of performance
FUNDING:
o Applications may request $50,000 to $100,000 for a project period of no more than one year
o Awards are anticipated to start on: January 1, 2025
o Budgeted direct costs may support scientific personnel, supplies, and services. Salary support for the PI must provide strong justification. Equipment and/or travel costs necessary to conduct the research may also only berequested with strong justification
